Have you been happy with your website experience? Yes No. I have an Essex frame made just a couple of years ago that I used for a dedicated. I had to file down the top of the frame just to get the slide to go on, and the mag catch hole was too high requiring me to do some fitting of the catch body to allow it to engage a magazine.

Little quirks like these seem to be the norm with Essex frames. Once fitted properly they work alright, but it'd be nice if they made everything to proper tolerance to begin with. Know what you're changing out and why.

You may spend a lot of money fixing things that weren't broken to begin with. Shoot at least rounds through it first, then decide what you don't like and want to improve. Regarding vintage s, pre pistols are highly collectible in original, unaltered condition and should NEVER be refinished or modified as it completely ruins their monetary value.

If I'm not mistaken Essex was the first to offer aftermarket frames around the 80s. I've built several guns and the biggest problem- with early frames was wandering holes which made it really hard to do a good trigger job.

But once they were up and running they generally were ok. I agree about the resale value being low compared to other frames. I own two Essex frame Commanders, one is in 45 acp and the other is in 38 Super. The 45 acp is all Essex, top and bottom with a Colt barrel and a fitted bushing. The frame is in stainless steal and the slide is in a mat type finish.

The slide and frame were also hand fitted by a local master gunsmith. I also fitted a BarStow 38 Super barrel and bushing to this gun. I have shot the 38 Super well over a thousand rounds since I have had the gun, and I have not had any problems with the Essex frame. The gun is still very tight and very accurate As for the all Essex 45 Commander, it too has seen lots of rounds shot thru it, not as many as the 38 Super but getting close, and I have not had any problems with it either.

I know some will bad mouth the Essex frames and slides, but as far as I am concerned, and because of my personal experience with these guns I do not bad mouth Essex. Maybe I am just lucky to have two of the GOOD Essex that were produced, or maybe those that complain about them may not have ever had an Essex gun before and are only repeating what they heard.
